My Company Core Values
I was leading a client vision / planning session yesterday, and while we were running through the exercises to narrow and determine their company's core values, I talked to them about what to do with the core values after they are created. My advice: post them everywhere, memorize them, talk about them weekly, raise up a team member's action that week as an example or a core value, and use them as the guiding principles whenever hiring, firing, reviewing, and celebrating the team.
Then they asked me about where my core value statements were. Or even what my core values are.
Uh.... whoops. I didn't have them on the website, anywhere. Or with me. Or even fully memorized. When you don't have a leadership team of your own, adherence the 'core values process' can fall by the wayside. But that's just an excuse, and I know it.
I don't want to be that typical business coach or 'consultant' who doesn't follow their own methods. So with that in mind, here's my core values, for all to see and judge me by:
1. Help First
Treat clients’ issues as if they are your own. They come to us because they know they need help.
2. Be Accountable
Do what you say you will do, period.
3. Be A Great Listener
Remember, what we do is never about us, so listen at least twice as much as you talk. You'll find ways to do core value #1 if you shut up once in a while.
4. Enjoy the Work
While what we do can and should seriously help our clients, we celebrate our successes and our clients' successes, have fun, and enjoy what we do so much that we are always learning more about what we do and how to get better at doing it.
5. Be Down to Earth
Don’t be a typical pompous know-it-all coach / consultant. Be professional yet approachable, be respectful, know (and admit) that you don’t know everything, all the time.
